Hey all, I'm off to San Francisco for the week to hang out with some old friends. Nothing going on up here except some sort of snow storm. This week was horible for me for personal reasons and it's going to be so nice to get out of here and go to my favorite city for a while. On the brighter side, I saw the Breeders on Saturday. The show was at a place called the Magic Stick which is basically just a big pool hall with a stage. The shows there are always intimate, making it one of better venues in Detroit. The band was quite tight, playing all of the old stuff and the new material is hot. I got to talk to Kim Deal for a little bit after the show which was damn exciting for me (the Pixies are my all-time favs). The whole meeting with your musician-heroes thing is always weird and ackward. Seems like all you can say is the cliche stuff (because its true) and hope that the person you're talking to doesn't get pissed. I resisted becoming one of those screraming girls in the footage of the Beatles concerts fairly well, but let a "your music completely changed my life" slip out. Anyway she was too nice and gave me a sweaty hug, making my week much more bearable. Kim is cool. Saturday, February 16, 2002

It's the news that Craig Patak and myself have been waiting for, Paul Westerberg is going to be releasing an album in April and going on tour this year! Actually it's even better than that on both accounts. The record is actually going to be a double record. One will be called "Stereo" and the other "Mono". The former will be similar to "Suicane Gratifaction" and the latter will be old school thrash in the style of Paul's alter ego, Grandpaboy. The titles reflect the method in which each was recorded. There is a big rumor swirling around that a couple of Replacements may have played on "Mono". The sweet news with the tour is the unconfirmed rumor that Tommy Stinson will be playing with Paul. This almost makes up for the absolutely destructive news I heard today (oh boy). Belle and Sebastian are going to be playing Detroit in the middle of May, when I will almost certainly be gone for the summer. I am being tested. Regardless, if you want the skivy on Paul, here is a link to prove that I am not making this up. Whoopy!!! Tuesday, February 12, 2002
Song In My Head As I Get Ready For Work:
You'd better stop dreaming of the quiet life cos it's the one we'll never know And quit running for that runaway bus 'cos those rosey days are few And stop apologising for the things you've never done 'cos time is short and life is cruel, but it's up to us to change This town called malice. Ooh yeah.
O.K. one last thing tonight. The subject of poetry vs. song lyrics and the argument that lyrics are less pretentious than poetry came up and made me think of songwriters whose lyrics could carry the weight without the sound. This said, as much as I get annoyed by sites full of song lyrics, this song came to mind. Can you guess what he's singing/talking/writing about?
When You Come by Neil Finn When you come across the sea Me like a beacon guiding you to safety The sooner the better now And when you come the hills Will breathe like a baby Pulled up heaving from the bottom of the ocean The sooner the better now When you come to cover me with your kisses Fresh like a daisy chained up in a lion's den I'll know you by the thunderclap Pouring like a rain of blood to my emotions And that is why I stumble to my knees And why underneath the heavens With the stars burning and exploding I know I could never let you down When you come like an iceberg floating in darkness Smashing my hull send me to the bottom of the sea I should know you better now When you come your majesty to entrap me Prince of light receding The sooner the better now And when you come to cover me With your kisses hard like armour The sooner the better now I'll know you by the thunderclap Pouring like a rain of blood to my emotions And that is why I stumble to my knees And why underneath the heavens With the stars burning and exploding I know I could never let you down She came out of the water Into my horizon Like a cumulo nimbus Coming in from the distance Burning and exploding Burning and exploding Like a slow volcano When you come Cover the ground with ashes When you come
On the subject of poetry, of which I am only a mediocre fan, I would like to share one of my favorites and the only poem I have memorized (everybody should have one).
Politics by W.B. Yeats How can I, that girl standing there My attention fix On Roman or on Russian Or on Spanish politics Yet here's a travelled man that knows What he talks about And there's a politician That has both read and thought And maybe what they say is true Of war and war's alarms, But O that I were young again And held her in my arms.
I heard Johnette Napolitano sing "Joey" tonight and can therefore die a relatively content person. I just got back from seeing Concrete Blonde in Detroit and am still buzzing a bit. The original lineup got back together a couple of months ago and they still sound fantastic. They were one of those bands that I really loved growing up but never got a chance to see live. I was bracing for the absolute worst (as is what I've come to expect from when bands normally get back together), but was utterly captivated by Johnette's stage presence and voice. There are certain bands and songs that you hear and they instantly remind you of who you were and what you were doing when they came out, and I guess Concrete Blonde has always been that way for me. It is sort of like seeing a really good friend from high school that you haven't thought about in years. I got more than a little choked up when they played "Tommorow Wendy", but then again I am a bit of a Twee-baby. Color me impressed. Sorry to edit you Taahm, but I just had to help you by tagging that elusive "e" onto the end of Concret and Blond. I is Obsessive Compulsive. Monday, February 11, 2002
Take the Personality Disorder Test. Here's my results. I give this information to you in the strictest of confidance.
When I was young boy I played that silver ball. I also played basketball, and while everyone was wearing the new Air Jordan or other ultra-cool shoe of the day, I generally had to settle for the "Shopko special". I used to have a theory that a persons buying attitudes and consumerism ideals in general somehow sprung from your parents buying attitudes for you as a child, but after having a conversation with a friend of mine I have to second guess my theory. As a person who didn't always get all the goodies he wanted while lots of people around him did, I developed a nasty sense of posession jealousy (which I still have to battle to this day) but at the same time I don't value things for their price-tag but just whether or not I like them, $100 or $1, Banana Republic or Thrift Store, doesn't matter. But my friend, having grown up with the same "Shopko special" mom, developed a need to seek out that better/quality deal and purposefully snub the upper-tier, chain companies. These ideals must have more of a political or anit-political birthplace, I don't know where but I just find it interesting. How's that for resolution? It's posts like these where I realize I must be doing this more for myself than other peoples entertainment, could anyone possibly care? Do I use too many commas?
Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey
Fear can sometimes be a useful emotion. For instance, let's say you're an astronaut on the moon and you fear that your partner has been turned into Dracula. The next time he goes out for the moon pieces, wham!, you just slam the door behind him and blast off. He might call you on the radio and say he's not Dracula, but you just say, "Think again, bat man." Song In My Head As I Get Ready For Work: Easy ready willing overtime When does it stop, where do you dare me to draw the line You got the body now you want my soul Don't even think about it say No Go Now I'll do anything you want me to I'll do almost anything that you want me to But I Can't Go For That No Can Do I can't go for being twice as nice I can't go for just repeating the some old lines Use the body now you want my soul Oo forget about it say No Go Yeah I'll do anything you want me to I'll do almost anything that you want me to But I Can't Go For That No Can Do. |
